Alabama Football vs Texas A&M: First Half Impressions
· Yahoo Sports
With the teams entering the half 17-17, this game might be setting QB play back a few decades.
Texas A&M opened up the game with a pick six and then another interception in the first five plays of the game. Unfortunately for Alabama, the offense could do absolutely nothing off of that, and came away with all of 0 points after being unable to move the ball and Conor Talty missing a chip shot field goal. Fortunately, Dijon Lee did make up for a bad penalty by jumping a curl and getting that pick six.

For the rest of the half, the Alabama offense did grab a few explosive plays – mostly on some wide open downfield throws to Rico Scott, but was otherwise dreadful on a play to play basis. Keelon Russell had some bad misses and threw a horrendous interception on his own side of the field after breaking about 6 tackles in the backfield. The Alabama run game had one nice run from Trae’Shawn Brown for 10 yards, but has otherwise been a whole lot of 1-yard attempts. Oh, and Will Sanders got injured, so the Tide is now playing Kayden Strayhorn and Mal Waldrep at left guard and center.
The Tide’s only touchdown came after they were bailed out with a very soft defensive holding call after getting stopped on third down, and they punched the ball in the endzone throwing to Daniel Hill in the flats.
Defensively, the Tide started great getting two interceptions, but after that, the defense gave up multiple full-field drives, often extending those drives with some undisciplined penalties. They’ve managed to make Marcel Reed look like a functional QB, which is about as far from a compliment as you can get. Oh, and now Red Morgan is suspended from the game due to a targeting.
I don’t know, man. This team looks overwhelmed and like they don’t have any answers for much of anything right now. If it weren’t for Reed throwing two bad picks to open the game and a couple of wide open tosses to Rico Scott after A&M busted a coverage, the Tide would probably be down a couple of scores. They just look dysfunctional across the board right now.
I don’t know what the answer is, but this team has no shot at this being a successful season unless they flip a switch and figure something out very quickly – this half.
